Now, then, listen up.  I don't want to have to be saying this twice.

Second Year - Lesson 1

Fantastic beasts and magical creatures.  Wizards and Muggles.  All live together in harmony.  More or less.

What causes magical creatures to exist?  Opinions and facts differ.

Some creatures were created by Wizards.  Wizards of the early days trying to create a better guard dog or a more fearsome living weapon.  Of course, some of these efforts created creatures, such as the Acromantula.  In hindsight, such creations were very poorly thought out and very dangerous in the end.  It has been hypothesized that the Puffkin was Wizard created, as a cleaning creature.

Other creatures have no known origin.  It is thought that they were created by pockets of magic, in the early early days.  Some think that Centaurs occurred when man and horse drifted into an area of magic, and perhaps the same could be said of the Merfolk.

Other creatures, such as Diricawls, Fwoopers, Grindylows, and Dragons are considered to have just been created by magic itself.

There are still other views that magical abilities were developed as an evolutionary advancement.  A bird growing in size, until it is a Roc, for example.  Or a horse developing wings.

Mind you, these are the scientific opinions.  There is also the religious view.  The most prevalent religious view is that the creatures were created by a deity as part of a general creation.
