Enough of that booklearning, we need some real beasties.

Second Year - Assignment 3

Streeler

The Streeler is a snail.  A giant snail.  A really really big snail.  It can grow to up to one foot high.  It changes color on an hourly basis, not unlike a fiber optic Christmas tree.

Streelers are native to Africa, but have been raised in all other parts of the world, save for those of extreme cold, or high salt concentration.  As with normal snails, a Streeler will shrivel and pop if enough salt is put on them.

A Streeler is a Class XXX (3X) creature.  The reason for this is the slime trail.  A normal snail's slime is disgusting, but not dangerous.  A Streeler's slime trail is so venomous that it shrivels and burns all vegetation over which it passes.  It will burn skin if a person is not cautious.

Some wizards keep Streelers as pets, because they enjoy the kaleidoscopic color changes.  Others like Streelers because their slime is one of the few substances that can kill Horklumps.  Some wizards are experimenting with Streeler slime to see if it could make a good solvent.

Runespoor

Runespoors originated in Burkina Faso, a small country in Africa.  It is a three-headed serpent.  It often reached a length of six or seven feet.  It's coloring is a bright orange with black stripes.  They have a good striking range and an intimidating appearance.  Due to its rather obvious nature, the Ministry of Magic in Burkina Faso has made some forests areas unplottable so the Runespoor can live in safety.

Runespoors are not very vicious, but they were a favorite pet of Dark wizards, and much of our knowledge of these come from the writings of Parselmouths who have chatted with the snakes.  It is through those writings that we know that each head of a Runespoor has a different purpose.

The left head (when facing the Runespoor) plans where to go and what to do next.  The middle head dreams, and may keep the Runespoor motionless for days as it loses itself in imaginings.  The right head is critical and evaluates the efforts of the other heads with unending irritated hissing.  It is common to see a Runespoor missing its right head, with the other two heads having conspired to bite the complaining head off.  It is the tendency to attack itself that makes Runespoors a short-lived creature.

The Runespoor is a Class XXXX (4X) beast.  The reason for this is that the right head has extremely poisonous venom within its fangs.  The other heads are less dangerous, but any attack on or by a three-headed serpent is a challenge not lightly entered into.

Runespoors produce eggs in their mouths, the only magical beast which does so.  The eggs are used in potions to stimulate mental agility and are therefore quite valuable.  A black market in Runespoor eggs and Runespoors has flourished for centuries.

Bundimun

You can find Bundimuns all over the world.  The resting Bundimun resembles a patch of greenish fungus with eyes.  When alarmed, however, it will scuttle away  on its numerous spindly legs.

Bundimuns are a Class XXX (3X) beast, because they ooze a secretion which can rot many things.  They are skilled at creeping under floorboards or behind the walls of housing and infesting houses, and their secretion will rot away the foundations of the house it is in.  They feed on common dirt.

You will know if you have Bundimuns in your home because they give off a powerful stench of decay as part of their rotting secretions.  A minor infestation can be handled with scouring charms.  However, if the Bundimuns have grown too large, the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures (Pest Sub-Division) should be contacted before the house collapses entirely.

Diluted Bundimun secretions are sought after for use in various magical cleaning fluids.
