Second Year - Lesson 4

Plimpy

The Plimpy is a spherical fish with two long legs ending in webbed feet.  It's coloring is a mottled grey, allowing it to blend nicely in the watery environment in which it lives.  Specifically, Plimpies inhabit deep lakes.  They walk along the bottom seeking food.  They prefer to dine on water snails, however, they will nibble the clothing and feet of swimmers unaware of their presence.

The Plimpy is a Class XXX (3X) beast.  It is not particularly dangerous, but is a nuisance.  They will follow people around, nibble them, etc.  Merpeople are particularly troubled by Plimpies and have discovered that tying their rubbery legs in a knot is the most effective way of dealing with them.  The Plimpy drifts along, unable to steer or guide itself.  It can take hours to unknot their legs, allowing their return.

Plimpy eggs are used by some wizards who seek the pleasures of bottom diving, without the bother of constantly floating.

Re'em

Re'ems are giant oxen with golden hides.  They can stand ten feet tall at the shoulder and traditionally have golden hides.  They are found in the wilds of North America and the Far East.

Re'ems are immensely strong, and their blood, when drank, gives the drinker immense strength.  However, it is difficult to acquire the blood as Re'ems are both rare and difficult to overcome.  Because of their height and strength, they are rated Class XXXX (4X).  They will defend themselves if necessary.

There was one well known Re'em, which suffered from a rare condition which caused its golden hide to have a blue tint.  A half-giant found it abandoned as a calf and tended it.  This ox, named Babe by the half-giant, worked with him in the lumber industry where their size made them legendary.

Chizpurfle

Chizpurfles are parasites.  They may be up to twentieth of an inch long.  They are crablike in appearance but with large fangs.

Chizpurfles are a Class XX (2X) beast.  Their danger lies in the fact that they are attracted by magic.  They may infest the fur and feathers of Crups and Augureys, or other such animals, even that of a familiar.  Moreover, they may enter wizard dwellings and attack magical objects.  They may attach themselves to a wand and gnaw through to the magical core.  Or they may settle in cauldrons, gorging on any lingering potion.  In addition, they may attack electrical objects, in the absence of magic.  Chizpurfle infestations may explain the failure of relatively new Muggle electrical items.

Chizpurfles are easy to destroy with certain potions, severe infestations may require a visit from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, Pest-Sub-Division.  The reason is that Chizpurfles who have injested potent magic substances may be harder to fight.
