Second Year - Lesson 6

Clabbert
Clabberts live in trees and look like a cross between a
frog and a monkey. The skin is smooth and hairless and a mottled
green. Their limbs are strong, supple, and long, allowing them to
swing easily between branches. The head has short horns and a wide
mouth. The mouth appears to be grinning and is full of razor sharp
teeth. They feed mostly on small lizards and birds.
Originally from the southern states of America, they
have been exported worldwide because of their main use. The
Clabbert has a large pustule in the middle of its forehead. When
it senses danger, it turns scarlet and flashes. Wizards obtained
Clabberts to give warning of approaching Muggles. The
International Confederation of Wizards has since outlaws the practice
and give fines to wizards who use them thus. The problem is, while
a tree full of glowing Clabbert pustules was decorative, it attracted
Muggles who wondered why their neighbors had their Christmas lights up
in July.
Clabberts are a Class XX (2X) beast, of no particular
harm.

Fire Crab
Fire Crabs are badly named. They resemble a large
tortoise with a heavily jeweled shell. A stretch of coast in its
native Fiji has been turned into a protective reservation. The
shell of the Fire Crab is highly sought. Muggles seek it for its
value. Wizards seek it for cauldrons.
Fire Crabs are a Class XXX (3X) beast, because they do
have a defense. When attacked, it shoots flames from its rear
end. More than a few wizards have been badly burnt attempting to
poach a Fire Crab. Fire Crabs can be exported as pets, with a
special permit.

Kelpie
Kelpies are found in Britain and Ireland and are water
demons. They can take various shapes, but they prefer appearing as
a horse with bulrushes for a mane.
Kelpies are a Class XXXX (4X) beast. They often
lure individuals onto their backs, then dive to the bottom of its river
or lake. Once there, they devour the rider, leaving the entrails
to float to the surface, the only sign that there had been a human
there. Kelpies can be overcome. If a wizard gets a bridle on
the head of a Kelpie with a Placement Charm, the Kelpie is rendered calm
and unthreatening.
The largest known Kelpie is located in Loch Ness,
Scotland. There, it prefers to take the form of a sea
serpent. The observers from the International Confederation of
Wizards realized they were not dealing with a serpent when they saw the
creature turn into an otter when a team of Muggle investigators
approached, and return to serpent form when they left.
