Third Year - Assignment 2

Erumpent

Erumpents are large, grey beats, weighing up to a ton and living in Africa.  They may be mistaken for a common rhinoceros from a distance.  This is because they have a thick hide, a long sharp horn on their nose, and a long rope-like tail.  However, they are not rhinos.  Their hides repel most curses and charms.

There are not many Erumpents.  This is because females give birth to only one calf at a time and because the males frequently explode each other during the mating season.  The Erumpent will not attack unless sorely provoked, or during the contests that mating season brings.  The Erumpent's horn can pierce everything flesh to metal and, more dangerous, contains a deadly fluid.  When that fluid is injected into something it will explode.  Because of this African wizards treat Erumpents with great caution and the Ministry of Magic gives them a XXXX (4X) classification.

Erumpent horns, tails, and the Exploding Fluid are all used in potions, but they are classified as Class B Tradeable Materials (Dangerous and Subject to Strict Control.

Mackled Malaclaw

The Mackled Malaclaw is a land-dewelling creature.  It is found mostly on rocky coastlines all around Europe.  Despite its vague resemblance to a lobster, it is not fit for human consumption.  Those foolish enough to eat it will suffer from a high fever and an unsightly greenish rash.

Malaclaws can reach a length of twelve inches and is a light grey with deep-green spots.  It eats small crustaceans and will attempt to tackle larger prey.

Malaclaws are classified as XXX (3X).  This is because the Malaclaw's bite has side effect of making the victim highly unlucky for a period of up to a week after the injury.  All bets, wagers, and speculations should be cancelled, as they will always go against the one bitten.

There is no official use for Malaclaw parts.  It is rumored that there are those in unscrupulous gambling circles have been experimenting with Malaclaws to see if their parts can be used in bad luck potions.

Quintaped

Quintapeds have a low-slung body, covered with thick reddish-brown hair.  It's five legs are covered with this hair, and end in a clubfoot.  The Quintaped is found only upon the Isle of Drear off the northernmost tip of Scotland.  Drear has been made unplottable to keep people away from the Quintapeds.  The reason for this is that Quintapeds are dangerous, carnivorous beasts who have a particular taste for humans.  Due to this, they are rated Class XXXXX (5X) beasts.

Quintapeds are also known as Hairy MacBoons.  The reason for this is that legend says the Isle of Drear was populated by two wizarding families, the McCliverts and the MacBoons.  A drunken wizard duel between the head of clan McClivert and the head of clan MacBooon led to the death of the head of clan McClivert.  In retaliation, a gang of McCliverts surrounded the MacBoon dwellings one night and Transfigured each and every MacBoon into a monstrous five-legged creature.  Too late, they realized the beast MacBoons were more dangerous.  They resisted every attempt to return them to human form and killed every McClivert, and everyone else on the island.  Without someone to change them back, they remained as beasts.

Whether the legend is true or not is unknown.  Quintapeds cannot talk and have strenuously, and successfully, resisted every attempt by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures to capture a specimen and try to untransfigure it.
