Oh!  It's you!  Sorry 'bout that...

Third Year - Lesson 4

Vorpal Bunny

The Vorpal Bunny appears to be a normal white rabbit.  Until it leaps at you and rips your throat out.  It's this latter aspect that gives the Vorpal Bunny its Class XXXX (4X) rating.

Vorpal Bunnies generally live in mountain regions, often deserted.  The deserted comes from their highly carnivorous nature.  There is nothing a Vorpal Bunny will not eat.  It is rare to find more than one Vorpal Bunny in an area, as they will eat each other.  Fortunately for the species, a single mating can result in up to seven offspring, which generally eat their mother.  Escapees from the litter create their own territory.

Vorpal Bunnies are best dealt with by running away.  Failing that, stupefying charms might help.  The greatest danger is often that wizards underestimate the Vorpal Bunny, and do not believe it to be of any danger.

Vorpal Bunnies get their name from the Lewis Carroll Book,  Through the Looking Glass (And What Alice Found There).  The poem, Jabberwocky, refers to a vorpal blade going snicker-snack and beheading the Jabberwocky.  Vorpal Bunnies behave in much the same way.  Except they prefer to rip out throats.

Some wizards have attempted to experiment with Vorpal Bunny parts, to see if they would be effective in brewing potions to increase ferocity.  Unfortunately, the leading wizard in this field, Fidelius Maximilius, was slain when his armor, which he thought proof against Vorpal Bunnies, failed to protect him (see second image).

Doxy

Doxies are often mistaken for fairies, even to the extent of being known as Biting Fairies.  However, they are a separate species.  Like fairies, Doxies have a minute human form.  However, a Doxy's body is covered in thick black hair and it has an extra pair of arms and legs.  The wings of the Doxy are curved, thick, and shiny, like a beetle's.

Doxies are found throughout America and northern Europe.  They favor cold climates, but not too cold, as they lay up to five hundred eggs at a time and then bury them.  The eggs hatch within three weeks.

Doxies have a Class XXX (3X) rating.  This is due to their double row of sharp teeth and the venom within them.  An antidote is required if bitten by a Doxy.

While Doxy wings are a part of some potions, only one real effort has been taken to identify Doxy uses.  Frentiliac MontBaton has struggled to create a potion to create temporary extra limbs.  So far, he has succeeded only in creating a third nose.

Niffler

Nifflers are black, fluffy, and long-snouted.  They enjoy burrowing in their native Britain.  Nifflers live in lairs which can be twenty feet underground.  They produce six to eight young in each litter.

Nifflers are best known for their ability to find wealth, in the form of anything glittery, such as gold or jewels.  To this end, goblins like to keep Nifflers for treasure hunting.

Nifflers are generally gentle, even affectionate, but their burrowing nature cannot be denied.  They are very destructive to belongings and homes, which helps earn them their Class XXX (3X) rating.

Most wizards who find Nifflers keep them for treasure seeking purposes.  Some wizards have used Niffler hair in treasure seeking potions.
