Fifth Year - Lesson 2

Chimera

Chemaeras, or Chimeras, are rare creatures from Greece.  They have a lion's head, goats body, and dragon's tail, although some wizards claim the tail is of a serpent.  Not much is known of Chimeras, including precisely what they look like, because of their bloodthirstiness and general viciousness.  In fact, they have a Class XXXXX (5X) rating due to their danger.

There is only one known instance of a wizard successfully slaying a Chimera, and that individual fell to his death from a Pegasus, too exhausted to stay aboard.

Chimera eggs are sought by some wizards with foul plans, but they are classified as Class A Non-Tradeable Goods.

Faerie

Faeries are small and pretty, though not particularly intelligent.  They are one to five inches tall, human in appearance, save for large insect like wings, which may be transparent, multi-colored, or similar in shade to gossamer.

Faeries have a weak form of magic that is used to deter predators.  They are often quarrelsome, but very vain, and will be docile if called upon to act as any sort of ornament.  Despite their appearance, and muggle legends, Faeries cannot speak, but use a high-pitched buzzing to communicate with other Faeries.

Faeries lay up to fifty eggs on the underside of leaves.  Bright colored larvae emerge, and after a little more than a week, they spin a cocoon, emerging a month later is full adults.

Faeries are a Class XX (2X) creature.  They are not particularly harmful, and enjoyed by many simply as beautiful ornaments.

Basilisk

Basilisks are called the King of Serpents, due to their size and power.  Herpo the Foul, a Greek Dark wizard and Parselmouth, bred the first Basilisk, hatching a chicken egg beneath a toad.  Since the middle ages, breeding Basilisks is illegal, although it is concealable simply by removing the egg from the toad when authorities visit.

Basilisks are a brilliant green and may reach fifty feet in length.  Basilisks will eat any creature and may live for hundreds of years.  Males have a scarlet head plume.  The venom of the Basilisk is extremely poisonous, but that it not the major risk from a Basilisk.  Anyone directly meeting the large yellow eyes of the Basilisk will die instantly.  This alone makes them worthy of their Class XXXXX (5X) rating.  Only Parselmouths are able to control Basilisks.
