Fifth Year - Lesson 4

Grindylow

Gryndylows are pale-green, horned water demons.  They are found in lakes throughout the British Isles.  They feed on small fish and are very aggressive towards Muggles and Wizards both.  Merfolk have been known to domesticate the Grindylow.

Their aggressiveness only merits them a Class XX (2X) rating because their long fingers, while very strong, are easy to break.  Some Dark wizards deliberately break and sever Grindylow fingers for use in binding charms.

Hurler

Hurlers are foot-long creatures, usually light with dark stripes, and a tail at least as long as they are, tapering to a point.  Hurlers are favored as pets by many wizarding families, because Hurlers don't mind being hurled.  Whether swung by the tail or rolled into a ball being tossed, Hurlers emit a happy sounding chirp.

Hurlers feed on vegetation such as household rodent pets do, though they seem to enjoy pudding as a treat.  Their friendly nature merits them a Class X (1X) rating, with high fluffiness. 

Phoenix

The Phoenix is a magnificent bird.  Swan-sized and scarlet, they have long golden tails, beak, and talons.  Though possessing of talons and beak, Phoenixes are gentle, never having been known to kill, and eating only herbs.  In the wild, they nest on mountain peaks and are found in China, India, Egypt, and Russia.

The powers of the Phoenix are many.  Phoenixes can regenerate by bursting into flames when its body grows frail, and rising from the ashes as a new chick.  They can disappear and reappear at will.  Phoenix tears have powerful healing properties.  And the Phoenix song itself is magical, reputed to increase courage in the pure-hearted and to strike fear into those whose hearts are impure.

Phoenixes are a Class XXXX (4X) beast.  Their rating is not due to aggression, but because so few wizards have succeeded in domesticating them.  A wizard who manages to have a Phoenix as a companion should be viewed as having the best qualities of the good hearted and just.
