Fifth Year - Lesson 3

Nogtail
Nogtails are found in rural areas in Europe, Russia, and
America. They look like stunted piglets, having thick, stubby
tails; long legs; and narrow black eyes.
A Nogtail will creep into a pigsty and suckle a sow with
other, normal, piglets. The danger of the Nogtail, however, is
that its presence brings blight to a farm, limiting crop and animal
production. The longer the Nogtail is undetected, and the larger
it grows, the worse the blight becomes. This danger gives them
their Class XXX (3x) rating.
Nogtails are fast and difficult to catch. However,
if chased off of a farm by a pure-white dog, the Nogtail can never
return. The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical
Creatures (Pest Sub-Division) maintains a dozen albino bloodhounds for
the removal of Nogtails.
Nogtail hair, ears, tail, and blood are all used in a
variety of curse spells and potions.

Porlock
Porlocks are found in Dorset, England and in Southern
Ireland. Porlocks resemble horses in some way. They are
covered in shaggy fur, a large quantity of rough hair on the head, as a
mane, and an exceptionally long nose. They walk upon two cloven
feet. Their arms are small and end in four stubby fingers.
Many Porlocks have tails, as horses do. Fully grown, they are two
feet high. They feed on grass in the manner of horses.
Porlocks are shy, mistrusting humans and always hiding
from them. Porlocks are horse guardians. They curl in the straw of
stables or shelter in the midst of the herd they protect. Their
guardian nature gives them their Class XX (2X) rating.
Porlock mane and tail hair has been known to be used in
protective charms.

Red Cap
Red Caps are dwarflike creatures. Small and
vicious, they dwell in holes in old battlegrounds, or anywhere human
blood has been spilled. Prevalent in northern Europe, Red Caps are
easily repelled by charms and hexes. However, an unwary and
solitary wizard or muggle may find themselves bludgeoned to death on a
dark night. Between their violent nature and their easy repelling
aspects, Red Caps are given a Class XXX (3X) rating.
