Seventh Year - Lesson 2

Antipodean Opaleye

One of the ten of Dragonkind's pure breeds, the Opaleye is considered by many to be the most beautiful of all of the Dragons.  It's scales are iridescent and pearly and its eyes are glittering, multi-colored, and pupil-less.  The eyes, so resembling the gemstone opal, are what gives the Dragon its name.

Opaleyes live primarily in New Zealand and they prefer to live in valleys, rather than mountains.  Should territory become scarce, some may migrate to Australia.  Both locations are ideal for the Opaleye, as the favorite food of these beasts is sheep.  Occasionally, they will attack larger prey, such as the kangaroo killings of the 1970s.  These killings were attributed to a male who'd been driven from his home territory by a dominate female.

Opaleyes are of a medium size, generally not more than two to three tons.  Their flame is a vivid scarlet, but is rarely seen, as they are not particularly aggressive by draconic standards.  Opaleye eggs are pale grey.  Muggles who find them may mistake them for fossils.

Chinese Fireball

The Chinese Fireball is the only Oriental Dragon, and has an appearance quite different from the others of its species.  The scales of Fireballs are smooth and a beautiful scarlet.  There is a fringe of golden spikes around the face, which has a snub snout.  Fireballs also have extremely protuberant eyes.

Fireballs live mostly in the mountains of China and Nepal.  They are more tolerant of other Dragons than most, and will sometimes share territory with two or three others.  They will dine on most mammals, but they have a particular fondness for pigs and humans.

Fireballs weigh between two and four tons, with females being larger.  They gain their name from their fire.  When angered, the Fireball sends a burst of mushroom-shaped flame from its nostrils.  This is not hard to observe, as Fireballs are aggressive and, therefore, often angered.  Their eggs are a vivid crimson speckled with gold.  Fireball eggshells are highly sought by wizards in China.
